Introduction:

Chania Airport (LGSA) is a dual use civilian and military airport located on the Akrotiri peninsula serving the city of Chania Crete. LGSA Chania is the sixth busiest airport within the nation of Greece, and as of 2018 served 3 million passengers.

Installation, Manuals, and Tools:

I got JustSim Chania from the fine people over at Simmarket and as most X-Plane sceneries it came as a single zip file. Within the Zip folder there is a folder for the airport scenery and for the mesh file for the area surrounding the airport. Both of these need to go into your custom scenery folder and after loading up X-Plane you are all set.

Who Flies to Chania?

According to the wikipedia entry for Thessaloniki there are 38 passenger airlines who service LGSA, with the vast majority on a seasonal basis. All of these airlines serve European destinations however, which may limit those who want to fly on a strictly realistic route.

The Airport:

JustSim did a great job making this feel right. I realize that “feeling” can’t really be quantified but LGSA feels like a Greek airport. The colors, the surrounding town, even the color of the sea are right. The buildings themselves look appropriate, many of these so called “holiday” airports have a similar aesthetic and JustSim nailed it here. The terminal looks great from both sides and is very well detailed.

The modeling is great and even the non-terminal areas are well modeled. Everything from fire stations to office buildings and maintenance hangars are present and filled with appropriate models. LGSA is also a dual use airport as said earlier and the military functions of this airport are fully present and while the texturing isn’t quite up to the same level it is nice to see JustSim giving the military side of the airport some love.

The surrounding city looks good but isn’t quite as large as a city like Athens or Thessaloniki so there isn’t quite as much to look at. As mentioned earlier the military functions of the airport are well represented and I loved the inclusion of a number of HAF and USAF static aircraft scattered around the airport to give it the real feel that it is a dual use airport

I always have to talk about textures because they are really what separate the best from the rest. JustSim has what I would call good but not great textures. The concrete and paint textures are top notch but some of the extras such as the grass around the military areas and the skid marks on runways leave a little to be desired.

Chania at Night:

My night screenshots weren’t working so you can see the JustSim images below however I feel they are a realistic representation of what I was able to see. The airport approach lights are well done, they seem appropriately sized and not overly bright. The apron lighting is top notch. The flood lights seem to transition well from dusk to night and look believable.

Performance:

Performance with this scenery was very great! I used the Milviz C310 and on my system (specifications are below), I was able to achieve low 30’s for frames on the ground, while taxiing, and take off. While flying around the airport I was able to achieve high 30’s to low 40’s for my frames per second. Considering the level of texturing and the modeling this scenery is well optimized.

Features:

  • Fully compatible with FTX Global openLC Europe
  • Shading and occlusion (texture baking) effects on terminal and other airport buildings
  • Ground polygons made with the requirements of the SDK Prepad3D
  • Dynamic lighting of the apron
  • High resolution ground textures / Custom runway textures
  • High resolution building textures
  • Many animated custom ground vehicles.
  • Surrounding area with custom autogen
  • Fully AI traffic compatible with accurat AFCAD file
  • Excellent night effects
  • 3D birds
  • 3D grass
  • Optimized for excellent performance
  • Fully 3d taxiways lighting
  • Automatic season change for vegatation, photobackground high resolution
  • Realistic reflections on glass
  • Inclusion of manual in PDF format

Final Thoughts:

Those who have read my reviews before know I have a soft spot for Aegean holiday airports. JustSim have recreated an airport which will definitely add to my collection. The modeling, texturing, and extras really make this airport seem alive. The fact that both the military and commercial side of the airport are modeled adds to the flexibility and wide appeal of this add on.

JustSim have kept up their run of great add-ons for X-Plane 11 with Chania International. If you are a fan of flying throughout Europe and the Meditteranean this is a great add on that wont give you buyers remorse, I highly recommend it.

To purchase JustSim Chania International head to Simmarket, where for $18.52 USD it can be yours.
