Review Pago Pago
ORBX Pago Pago, heaven in fsworld
Exotic white beaches with beautiful lagunes far away from everyhere else. Where life problems seems to fade away in the heat of the sun. Are you dreaming away yet? Seems like the perfect holiday for many people but also unreachable for many but not anymore for flightsim pilots. Are you an occasional VFR flyer or Bush pilot, then ORBX developed a scenery for you that you really should check out.
You may remember the popular FTX: PI AYPY Jacksons International Airport. Which was the first part in the “Papua New Guinea experience” developed by Tim Harris and Ken Hall which was released in 2014.
Orbx now released the second part of this package as “NTSU Pago Pago International Airport“. This package has the entire American Samoa & Samoa region and spreads over 3000 Square km’s with 17 Islands and 7 airports.
2 Major airports perfect for IFR flights:
-NSTU Pago Pago International Airport
-NSFA Faleolo International Airport
5 smaller airports to test your skills with VFR in one of your GA aircrafts, believe me some of the approaches can be very challenging.
-Z08 Ofu Airport
-FAQ Fitiuta Airport
-NSFI Fagali’i Airport
-NSAU Asau Airport
-NSMA Maota Airport
The download takes about 519 MB and after installation it takes about 1.3 GB from your flightsim installation it’s very straight forward and uses the Orbx Wrapper which should not be any problem.
I installed the scenery in Prepar3D 2.5
The Orbx manual covers the most common subjects like; recommended simulator settings, scenery coverage, airport diagrams and airport information and charts; The usual nothing more and nothing else then any other Orbx manual.
At my first boot I started at NTSU Pago Pago international airport at the island of Tutuila. I was amazed of the level of detail at the airport. At the correct time of day the hawaiian 767 will be at the gate. Hawaiian airlines serves Pago Pago on a regular basis. More static aircrafts can be found at the ramps and inside the hangars be sure to check it out.
The Buildings have great high quality textures just like the runways and taxiways everything looks great. Time for some sightseeing across the island.
At take off you can already see the great detail of the island. The hand placed custom autogen and the vegetations combined looks very good. Not far from the airport after a few miles your will discover a huge cove where the harbor is located.
And once again Orbx amazes me with the fantastic details of it. Several cruize ships are waiting for their passengers along with coastguard ships and a few other ones. Fun fact the helipad on the coastguard ship can be used to land your helicopter.
I continue my sightseeing flight around the Island and I discovered some shipwrecks and stranded ships along the shoreline of the island. It’s amazing how much effort has been brought with the main island.
I continue my flight and decide to make a short hop to the closest airports and I’m a bit disappointed, by the fact that the quality of the airport ground textures are not on the the same level as the main island. Runways look like they are just a layer on the ground same for the taxiways. A nice compensation would be volumetric grass. Luckly there are always one or 2 static aircrafts and alsways some animated people hanging aournd, so it never feels deserted.. Never the less it’s a shame about ground textures and a missed opportunity in my opinion.
A complete list of features
-American Samoa 100% covered with 30/60cm pristine photoreal, custom autogen and crisp 10m terrain mesh
-Samoa (formally Western Samoa) covered by hand placed landclass and vector polygon scenery with photoreal insets for the airports, completely re-drawn shorelines and beaches and topped off with a 30m terrain mesh
-Custom Samoan HD autogen vegetation and houses
-Custom Samoan static aircraft
-Huge number of custom POI objects
-AI USCG cutter with land-able helideck
-Strongly optimized for good performance with complex aircraft types
-Advanced rendering, ambient occlusion and unique night-lighting techniques used for maximum realism
-Animated people and birds
-Highly detailed APXs
I can be short on this as I encountered no issues with any other add on installed in my P3D installation.
I tested the scenery with several GA aircrafts like Carenado, A2A and Alabeo and not once my FPS dropped below 50 FPS in any of the VC’s .
In spot view my FPS always stayed up in the high 70 FPS
My system specs:
Intel I7 5820K overclocked to 4,8 ghz
16 GB DDR4 memory
2x GTX 980 in SLI
P3D very minimal tweaked with custom nvidia inspector profile for AA
other add ons used: FTX BASE, FTX vector, REX4, Soft clouds, Active Sky next, Ultimate Traffic2
Although it has a few disappointments the fun factor is still very high.
The Price is a bargain considering you got 7 airports and 17 islands to discover and the performance is amazing, I would recommend it to everyone who likes VFR flights.
Enjoy Your island hoppings
